Victory In Jesus

I have been going through a lot of introspection about what I have been missing in my own worship to God. I feel like I haven't really been changing much. I'm not going from glory to glory while worshipping my Lord. I have been desiring to sing some of the old hymns (and no, I did not request that my husband close out worship with Victory in Jesus, but I'm glad that the Spirit of God made Him sing it).

I have been thinking about how the old Scipture songs and hymns caused one to eat the Word and focus on what has been said/done for us and compels us to change. I have decided that the old hymns do a few things for us: establish that we are bankrupt and in need of a Savior, it establishes that Jesus is the answer, by song we are compelled to overcome the need through repentance and by the end of the song we have hope and happiness. Take "Victory in Jesus" for example...

I heard an old, old story, how a Savior came from glory,
How he gave his life on Calvary to save a wretch like me;
And I heard about his groaning, of his precious blood's atoning,
Then I repented of my sins and won the victory.

Refrain:
O victory in Jesus, my Savior forever!
He sought me and bought me
With his redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew him,
And all my love is due him;
He plunged me to victory
Beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about his healing, of his cleansing blood revealing,
How he made the lame to walk again and caused the blind to see;
And then I cried, "Dear Jesus, come and heal my broken spirit,"
And somehow Jesus came and brought to me the victory.
Refrain.

I heard about a mansion he has built for me in glory,
And I heard about the streets of gold beyond the crystal sea;
About the angels singing and the old redemption story,
And some sweet day I'll sing up there the song of victory.
Refrain.

There is such a change that takes place from uttering those first few words that we have heard an old, old story and within a matter of words we are declaring that we have victory in Jesus. I feel like I have the victory over my flesh today and I am thankful for all that my Lord has done for me. I pray that as I start the week out that I can be mindful of His presence and know that I have the victory.

I asked Grandma C. if she had an extra hymnal that I could have. I've been missing some of them good ole songs and feel like they would help revive my spirit. Did the visitors come today? I believe your Wed. nite prayer meetings are paving the way for new and fresh things at RCFC.
Love ya, Brenda

I don't know if I'll ever thoroughly enjoy the melodies of old hymnals, but there's something about the lyrics and the heart behind them that gives me a warm feeling. Many of the newer songs we hear are too complicated in the lyrics and melodies to worship with, so it's good to have songs that are right to the point. Love you guys. We need to have our night out soon, and dump off all the kids on mom and dad. ;)

Hey, when do Mom and Dad get their night out? Are we so boring that we can't go with you? Sans kids, of course.

Umm, mom, if you can work out the details for the kids, than you're welcome to come with. Maybe we can pawn them off to the next gerneration up. Grandma has plenty of energy for 4 kids, right? Or we could figure something out while me kiddies are in Michigan this weekend (minus Saturday).

Nichole,
I agree with you on the hymns.
They cannot be beat. I love the new praise and worship songs, but most full gospel churches never use them. I don't know why, they are so rich.
And that song, Victory in Jesus...When Jimmy was just a little guy, probably 3 or 4, instead of singing "He plunged me to victory...he would sing, "He punched me to Victory".
What ever it takes, huh?

Jan, you got me there. :) I'm glad that he plunges rather than punches. But yes, whatever it takes.

Momma C and Amy Jo - My mom would be up for watching Shep this weekend as long as there aren't any new developments. Continue praying for my sister...she is still struggling with symptoms. She has been to the hospital at least three times this week for IV's and stuff.

I might have an extra hymnal or two lying around. I'll see if I can find one in the new house and I'll give it to you soon. Love you all!
